Side effects of the sciatic nerve being pinched can be that of numbness, tingling, weakness and even pain. These symptoms can be felt in the lower back, down the back of the leg and even into the foot. Sometimes the symptoms can be so intense that they debilitate the sufferer to the point that everything stops and the need for sciatica relief becomes immediate.
Although a few of the symptoms were just noted, there are other symptoms that can arise and the symptoms can vary from person to person. Since the sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and then splits and runs down both legs, it is possible to experience symptoms in one or both legs. The sciatic nerve goes directly through the buttocks so if you sit for extended periods of time, the tingling, numbness or pain in the buttocks can easily increase and spread further down the leg. If sciatica relief is not addressed when the symptoms begin, the symptoms will only get worse. Each symptom will become more intense and even prevent standing or walking at any given time.
Since sciatic pain is the cause of a related issue, the term sciatica is not considered a medical diagnosis. The related issue could be that of a herniated disk or perhaps something more severe such as spinal stenosis. The sciatic nerve does not cause pain unless something is placing pressure or causing it to be pinched. This is why it is important to be correctly diagnosed; otherwise the pain could be treated incorrectly and sciatica relief will not be obtained quickly enough for the sufferer.
Affecting those mainly between the ages of 30 to 50, sciatica pain may not always occur due to one specific injury or event. Issues with the sciatic nerve can develop over time due to daily use of the spine, muscles and tendons. Sciatica is clinically diagnosed as “radiculopathy” due to a spinal disc being moved out of alignment which results in pressure being applied to the root of the radicular nerve that is found in the lower back.
Sciatica relief of the multiple symptoms that can arise can be found in a number of various treatments. The best non-evasive way to obtain relief is by exercising. Exercising can be that of walking, stretching, yoga or specific exercises that are assigned by the attending specialist. Walking is an excellent way to help the lower back to become stronger and be more flexible. Begin walking at a slow pace and gradually work up to a brisk pace, if possible.
Low impact exercises such as stretching and yoga are also great, and they can reduce or even eliminate sciatic pain. By stretching tight muscles, the pressure is reduced which minimizes pain. Remember before beginning any exercise routine, discuss it with your health provider first.
When you begin to feel any of the symptoms that have been discussed here, talk to your doctor or other qualified professional to determine the exact cause of the pain. You want to ensure that the correct diagnosis and treatment are given. Sciatica relief is possible and can be found through a variety of treatments.
